Why sponsor a child? There is a great gap in life’s opportunities between children in poor parts of China, especially in the west mountainous areas and children in more developed parts of China and developed Western countries. This includes education opportunity, teaching environment and quality, nutrition, environment, sanitation, health services, economic conditions and so on. Furthermore, this gap continues to expand. In addition, because they have less contact and know little about the world outside their villages or towns, their horizons are limited. All of these factors limit the future development of these children. Sponsoring a child is one of the best ways to create a world where all children can realize their full potential. Sponsors and children write letters, share photos and sometimes exchange gifts. Occasionally, sponsors may visit children. Each year or each month, sponsors make a small donation to support development projects in the children’s villages. These projects include improvement of education, sanitation and service capacity of communities in the children’s villages, increase of incomes, enhancement of technology, potable water and irrigation, comprehensive capacity building of communities and so on. In all of these projects, children and members of communities take a leading role in deciding the needs of their community, identifying solutions to problems and participating in implementing projects to improve their community. Plan China builds a bridge between children and sponsors through sponsorship. Whilst improving children’s survival, protection and development condition, Plan China helps sponsors know the children who live in another world and their living conditions. At the same time, children get opportunities to know the outside world, enlarge their horizons and strengthen their motivations of self-improvement. This encourages and develops their understanding of the world from childhood. Plan’s caseload in China By June 30th 2008, Plan China has sponsored 30,300 children in over 500 administrative villages of Shaanxi Province and Ningxi Hui Autonomous Region. How to sponsor a child? Sponsoring a child requires a commitment of about 260 USD per year (the number may changed yearly) to support development projects in a child’s village. The donations can be made to Plan China’s sponsoring account as a one-off payment or as a monthly contribution. We encourage sponsors and children to communicate with each other. We translate all letters and deliver them to ensure the children’s rights are protected. We also assist sponsors to visit children. At present, Plan China’s sponsors are mainly from developed countries. Plan China has not directly invited local sponsors in China. However, in accordance with internal Chinese Government policies, Plan China will enroll local sponsors in the future.
