CapitaLand Limited, one of the largest listed property groups in Asia, cooperated with Plan China in a child nutrition project to solve the nutrition problem of over thousands of children in Asian Region when the World Food Day was coming around on 16th October. On 15th October, a grand ceremony of grant and volunteer activity was held in one of the Plan China’s programme area—Chun Hua County, Shaanxi Province. Leaders from CapitaLand, Plan China and the County Education Bureau attended the event. According to the statistics, over 3.1 million children die of malnutrition every year. Among all the undernourished children, more than 70% are living in Asia, who are in a vicious circle of disease, growth retardation and reduced learning ability for a fairly long period of time. The fast growing economy in China solved part of these problems. However, children’s nutritional status remains grave in the poor rural areas of China. The stunting rate of the children under 12 caused by malnutrition is up to 31.5% in Plan China’s project areas in China. Anemia is affecting 25% of the children in Shaanxi Chunhua project area with micronutrition lack affecting 33% of those children. Therefore, Plan China is sustainably carrying out and advocate for the child nutrition project in the Asian countries including China, which has received active response from the CapitaLand Limited which is keen on the public welfare cause. The project provides 110, 000 children from China, Thailand and Philippines with nutrition supplement. When the World Food Day of 2010 came, 19 staff from CapitaLand visited Nan Cun Primary School in Chun Hua County, Shaanxi and held a grant ceremony to initiate the project, at which 500,000 RMB was donated to 14 schools.
In the speech of Zhao Beiping, the Director of China Mid-western Operations of Ascott China, he said, “We are very glad that with the cooperation of Plan China, we will successfully complete the project in Shaanxi and make our contribution for children’s nutrition improvement. On behalf of Plan China, Liu Zhongliang, the Sponsorship, Grants and Communications Support Manager, accepted the cheque brought by the Vice President of Xi’an Xindicheng Project of CapitaLand at the grant ceremony held in Chun Hua, Shaanxi, who also promised to provide 6,725 students in 14 middle and primary schools in Chun Hua County with micronutrient-added food, improve the food and sanitation of the school canteens, arrange trainings on nutrition and health for the 13,250 community members and keep a close eye on the nutrition status of children growth. To encourage staff to participate in the activity, staff representatives from CapitaLand Limited served as volunteers in Chun Hua County on their visit to the children and related community and organized the child-participation activities with Plan China staff.
