Torrential rains have hit the south, northwest and northeast China over past two months. The statistics from the Office of State Flood Control and Drought Relief Headquarters shows that as of 26th July, there were totally 124 million people in 28 provinces/ districts/ municipalities affected by floods since the beginning of this year, causing 823 people dead and 437 missing, and the direct economic losses are worth CNY 154.1 billion. As a humanitarian organization, Plan China has immediately taken disaster relief actions to respond to floods. The Disaster Risk Management Team of Plan China went to Jiang Xi Province, one of the most severely hit areas, twice in July to investigate and assess the disaster situation, and decided to provide relief support to Li Chuan County. Immediately after this, a Cooperation Agreement on Flood Disaster Relief Project of Li Chuan County was signed by Plan China, Jiang Xi Provincial Charity Federation and Li Chuan County Civil Affairs Bureau. According to the agreement, Plan China will entrust its partners to purchase and distribute relief goods worth CNY 860,000 (USD 125, 972) to flood affected areas, including nearly 200 thousand kilo rice, winter clothing, underwear, etc. Li Chuan County was badly hit by the flood on June 18th, which caused 13,292 damaged and collapsed houses and affected 1,362 households. Nearly 30 teaching buildings of schools were also collapsed during this flood. 90% farmlands were inundated, leading to no harvests. Currently, with regard to the floods, Plan is in the process of evaluating the disasters, with the coordination with its partner--Shaanxi Women’s Federation.
