From July 25th to August 1st in 2011, Plan China Community Child Center Programme, assisted by Shaanxi Women’s Federation and Red Phoenix Project, conducted a one-week volunteer teaching service to enrich the summer vocation of school-age children in Shaanxi rural areas as well as to promote their knowledge of the outside world through communicating with university volunteers. 46 university students have participated in this summer vocation volunteer activity as volunteer teachers in 14 Community Child Centers. Before the volunteering service started, volunteers received a two-day training through which they learned some basic communication skills, family education theories and related child protection policies; they also conducted simulation training and practices. In the following five-day volunteering service, volunteers were soon at ease when seeing warm-hearted care givers and lovely rural children. They guided care givers to work together with children in making activity plans, and conducted various activities afterward. The volunteering service has greatly enriched the life in Community Child Centers, and more and more children accompanied by parents came to the Centers and joined in the activities such as playing games, listening to stories and giving performances. 15-year-old girl Qianqian from Chunhua County said:" I have a lot of schoolwork and I'm really shy, so there aren't many opportunities for me to participate in activities and make friends. Now, the Community Child Centre in our village makes it possible for me to go there to read books I like and play games with others when I am free. My classmates all think that I laugh more than before and that I've become more open."

"This practical activity not only improved our organising ability and confidence, but also made us aware that rural children still need more care to ensure their healthy growth,” volunteer Sun Bin said.
