On 10 April 2009, the New Citizens Community Technology Learning Centre (CTLC for short), co-established by Plan China, Microsoft Corporation, Sichuan Poverty Reduction Foreign Capital Project Management Centre, Chengdu Qing Yang District Commission of Communist Youth League, Chengdu Qing Yang District Youth Employment Service Centre and University of Electronic Science& Technology and Chengdu University of Information Technology and other universities and colleges, held stage achievements exchange conference. On the conference, Li Jianghua, the Program Support Manager of Plan China, stated, “Plan China will endeavour to help improve the capacity of the CTLC and widen the channel of fundraising as well as strengthen the inner management to promote the sustainable development of projects and organizations. As a child-centred development organisation, Plan pays especial attention to the problems that the migrant children face in various issues about migrant population. We will also cooperate with more organizations to solve the crucial problems of migrant population together. ” The representative of trainees shared her experiences and what she has learned at the CTLC. She said, “The CTLC in Qing Yang District not only helps us gain computer knowledge, but also opens a window of changing our life with knowledge for us. We sincerely appreciate the centre for offering us migrant workers a chance of free study and further growing”. At the end of the conference, the Microsoft Corporation and leaders of Chengdu Municipal Committee of Communist Youth League presented awards for outstanding volunteers; Leaders from Sichuan Provincial Committee of Communist Youth League and Qing Yang District Commission presented a token of appreciation to Plan China and Microsoft Corporation. Being established in March of 2008, QingYang CTLC helps the disadvantaged groups to grasp basic information technology to improve their capacity of finding employment and competitive strength and thereby improve their living standards as well as increase their senses of belonging to the city life, through organizing trainings of basic computer knowledge, network knowledge and labour skills. After the WenChuan earthquake, this centre also played an important role in victim temporary habitation, psychological consultation and skills training and employment, etc. Plan China offered instruction and coordination to this public-interest project, and QingYang District Commission of Communist Youth League also actively organized volunteers from University of Electronic Science& Technology and Chengdu University of Information Technology and other universities and colleges. In 2008, Chengdu Municipal Committee of Communist Youth League and Chengdu Young Volunteers Association conferred an honorary title of “Excellent Project of Chengdu Young Volunteers of 2008” to the community technology learning centre. Presently, this centre has become a model for various communities and set up examples in the respect of public welfare, socialization, open and sustainable development. By March of 2009, the centre has trained 1690 new citizens, and more than 5000 new citizens has benefited from it indirectly. Based on the experiences of the CTLC, Akhtar Badshah, the General Director of Microsoft Corporation Worldwide Community Affairs, also announced on the conference that Microsoft Corporation will cooperate with Fu Ping Development Institute to build 6 more CTLCs in Sichuan and Gasu Provinces and establish 3 CTLCs in Sichuan Province together with China Foundation for Poverty Alleviation to keep supporting the earthquake reconstruction in the following two years. On the same day, FuPing & Microsoft Sichuan DaYi Community Technology Learning center is announced to be formally established. |
