HFMD (Hand, Foot and Mouth Disease) Materials Donation Ceremony, presided over by Li Jinbin, Deputy Governor of JiaXian County, was held at the 4th floor meeting room of JiaXian People’s Government. The participating members include Gao Shengfang, Deputy Chairperson of Local People’s Congress and Director of Plan China’s Steering Committee, Chang Peilian, Plan China’s JiaXian PU, Gao Zhenfeng, Director of JiaXian Public Health Bureau, Kang Caihong, Chairwoman of Women’s Federation, staff of JiaXianPU and major leaders from the several townships.

On 1^st May 2009, a suspected HFMD case was found in JinMingSi Central Primary School, which belonged to Plan’s program township. On 2^nd May, the case was confirmed. In the following several days, this virus was spreading quickly. Till 7st May, JiaXian People’s Hospital had confirmed 44 HFMD cases, among which 33 cases were cured. Suspected cases were also found in the surrounding townships around JinMingSi Town. Facing the severe situation, Chang Peilian, JiaXian PU Manager, immediately reported it to Plan China’s Country Director Mark Leighton. A 100 thousand RMB project proposal on disease prevention and control materials was then concluded with JiaXian Public Health Bureau in one day (70 thousand from Plan China and 30 thousand from the local government as matching fund), and the proposal was approved. The funds were mainly used to purchase disinfectants, hand sanitizers and various kinds of sterilizing equipments. On 8^th May, the Donation Ceremony was held in JiaXian People’s Government.

Each student has a hand sanitizer During the donation ceremony, Li Jinbin, Deputy Governor of JiaXian County, and Gao Shengfang, Deputy Chairperson of Local People’s Congress and Director of Plan China Steering Committee praised Plan’s timely and resolute action under the situation of funds-strapped. Moreover, they also gave instructions to ensure the safe use of funds. Chang Peilian, Plan China JiaXian PU Manager, introduced the implementation of Plan’s projects in JiaXian and emphasized the investment purpose this time, i.e. expecting epidemic to be under control very soon, children to go back to schools and all children to grow up healthily and happily in a safe environment. Plus, Ms. Chang read the letter from Plan China’s Country Director Mark Leighton. Leaders of each township expressed their determinations to guarantee the safety of prevention and control materials. Finally materials were issued to the participators.

Just as what Mark said, the first anniversary of WenChuan Earthquake would come in 4 days. On this special occasion, HFMD and H1N1 are spreading. These are the newest and most serious examples that Nature tests human beings to fight disasters. Just like that we can quickly respond to earthquake, we are firmly confident that in JiaXian, our challenge to HFMD will be successful.
