Last week (22nd to 27th June, 2009), in Yulin District, we held a child participation training workshop for Plan staff and partners. The training lasted five and a half days and we had participants from Yulin, Jiaxian and Longde PUs, as well as two partners and one member of the Sponsorship Team in Xian. After two and a half days of theory, we passed to the application and started preparing some practice sessions which were held on three consecutive days in a Primary School of Yulin. The participants were divided into six groups and each group worked with about 20 children from Grades 3 to 6. After playing some games with the children to relax the atmosphere and get to know them better, we used role play, discussions and village maps to learn more about the difficulties they are facing in their daily lives. The children gave us the following list of their priorities: · Our dormitory beds are uneven and uncomfortable; · The food we receive in school is not always clean; · We do not receive enough vegetables in winter; · We cannot manage our time well, so we do not have enough time to play; · Our playground is dangerous – we hurt ourselves when we fall down; · There are many flies and mosquitoes in our classrooms and dormitories. In each group, we studied these problems with the children and prepared a plan of action. The solutions proposed by the children were very creative and quite impressive. One group made several fly swats and between them killed 408 flies and mosquitoes, while passing on the related hygiene message to their families and neighbours, so that they too would try to eliminate the flies from their homes. One group collected plastic bottles to earn money to buy vegetables and another prepared posters warning the other children of the dangers in the play-ground. On the last day, we evaluated the changes in the children (as well as their action and out work with them) and the list of changes that they mentioned was very impressive – from learning to work together and express themselves, to advising their families and neighbours about the misdeeds of flies and how to eliminate them, to a greater sense of solidarity among them and learning to solving their own problems. Most people were pleasantly surprised to see what the children were able to do! This was much more than they expected. ![]() ![]() |
