A major earthquake measuring 8 on Ritcher scale hit Wenchuan County in Sichuan Province of Southwest China at 2:28 p.m. 12 May 2008. Tremors also happened in many other parts of China. In the whole country, more than 69,000 people died and more than 18,000 were reported missing. As neighboring Shaanxi Province, Hanzhong District in the South was also seriously affected. In Hanzhong District, 11 counties and regions and 197 towns were damaged to different extents. According to incomplete information, 121 people died and 2937 were injured in the whole of Shaanxi Province. As an international, humanitarian, child-centered development organization, Plan China took quick activities after the jolts. During the process, Plan China responds with a child-centered approach to disasters which affect communities both in and beyond program areas. The recovery programme works on building the resilience and preparedness of children, families and communities to mitigate and cope with the affects of disasters. Through operation of child-centred psychosocial support, school reconstruction, relocation water and environmental sanitation and other projects, we ensure children’s voices are heard and children have a role to play in the disaster recovery process. |
