Project Summary In the fiscal year 2007 we brought six years of experience in improving children’s ear, eye, nose and throat health to Chunhua, Luonan and Danfeng Counties, Shaanxi Province. Project activities included health education in communities and schools, training for community doctors, check-ups for eye, ear, nose and throat diseases and children’s medical treatment, training and education opportunities for children with impaired hearing and awareness campaigns. In fiscal year 2008, we continued operating the EENT project in Luonan and Danfeng Counties, Shaanxi Province. The main work included: developing materials about disease prevention and suitable treatment for communities, launching a quiz show about disease prevention in schools, carrying out health education, providing treatment for sick children, monitoring and evaluation of the project and promoting our experiences in villages, middle and primary schools. Impact Over the past years, we provided training for doctors, built a township health service network and made medical treatment available for children. This has increased awareness, access and quality of healthcare for children who are at risk or affected by eye, ear, nose and throat problems. In total, more than 100 community doctors and staff from the Shaanxi Health Education and Promotion Association were trained. The trainees were given a test and an evaluation before and after training. These doctors now work on providing community health education, diagnoses, treatment and recommendations. We continue engaging with the project partners and beneficiaries to help research efforts to improve and expand the influence of the project. Our Partners We work with the Logan Family Foundation, the Shaanxi Health Education and Promotion Association and the Shaanxi Chunhua County Handicapped League. Future of the ProjectIn fiscal year 2009, we will continue to work in Luonan and Danfeng Counties. Meanwhile, the project will be re-introduced to Plan’s original program countries whilst exploring and establish enduring mechanism to ensure the project’s sustainability. |
