With 20% of the world’s students, China manages the largest education system in the world. In the past few years, China has made tremendous progress in improving the quality of education for its approximately 180 million school age children, age six to fourteen-year-olds. Plan China’s most recent survey confirmed that equity, effectiveness, and efficiency are major challenges facing the development of education in rural areas in China. The goals of Plan China’s work in education are to improve the quality and accessibility of education. Through our work with schools and students we also aim to make the voices of children and communities heard. Lastly, we work to improve health and sanitation of students and in schools. We work to integrate technology into rural classrooms, encouraging the use of information technology as a tool for students and teachers, in our Integrated Rural Information Technology Project. In the School Improvement Project we work to create a school environment that is conducive to children’s education by giving children opportunities to make decisions about their schools and providing teachers’ training and school equipment and infrastructure. We work with teachers, health workers and officials from education bureaus to improve the quality and accessibility of education and care for preprimary school children in our Early Childhood Care and Development Project. Lastly, in our School Sanitation and Health Education Project, we work to advance health education and facilities in rural schools.
